This morning, Mazda Motor Corporation announced that its millionth MX-5 Miata rolled off the line on April 22, 2016. Mazda began mass-production of the popular roadster 27 years ago at Ujina Plant No. 1 in Hiroshima.

“From the first generation through to today’s fourth-generation model, the reason we have been able to continue selling the MX-5 all these years is due to the strong support of fans around the world,” said Masamichi Kogai, representative director, president and CEO, Mazda Corporation. “Mazda was founded in Hiroshima 96 years ago, and as we move toward our centennial year we will continue offering customers the joy of driving with this model, which has become a symbol of our brand. Mazda aims to create a special bond with customers and become a ‘one-and-only’ brand they will choose again and again.”

In celebration the milestone, Mazda will be displaying the one-millionth model at various fan events in Japan and around the world. Its first stop will be the Hiroshima Flower Festival on May 3. It will arrive in the U.S. in September and several stops around the country before arriving at its final destination at the annual Miatas at Mazda Raceway in the beginning of October.

MX-5 currently holds a Guinness World Record as the best-selling two-seater sports car.
